THIS WEEK

FOCUS ON VANESSA LONGO

Vanessa Longo is an Italian artist born in 1974. She lives and works in Florence (Italy.)

I met Vanessa in New York in 2014.

Her work is unusual, unique, and one can say that she is a great painter and draughtswoman.

The alliance of sensual painting with the use of copper in phantasmagoric compositions drew my interest.

Vanessa Longo has an impressive record of exhibitions throughout the world. She won scholarships, prizes, and awards. In fall 2017, she was chosen as the Italian representative for a show in China. The Xu Cun International Art Commune museum has selected the painting “More Human than You Man” to be part of their permanent

collections.

Vanessa Longo is inspired by animals and monsters from the fantastic realm, often from medieval bestiaries. Initially, women are set against a foe. In later works, they penetrate it. The results are figures with female bodies and

beast heads or women embedded in animals. More recently, in her latest works, Vanessa Longo asserts her right to difference and transcribes her emotions and reflections about the condition of women in our societies.

She first paints her subject and then completes her creation with shaped and chiseled copper foils nailed to the panel.

Her works are stunningly emotional, combining sensuality and fragility with a phantasmagorical power.

As a key to her message, Vanessa Longo gives long titles to her works. For example, “l’inaccetabile leggerez-za della suonatrice d’arpa senza corde”: “the unacceptable thoughtlessness of the woman playing a harp without strings.”

reveals a philosophical reflection where ‘philosophical’ can be interpreted in all its meanings ‘metaphysical’ or ‘stoical.’
